ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSES IN SMALL CLASSES

Intensive Italian language courses take place all year round, from Monday to Friday, usually from 9am to 1pm (20 hours a week) or from 9am to 11am (10 hours per week).
Students take a placement test in order to be placed at an appropriate level.
There are seven levels: beginner, elementary, pre intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, advanced, proficiency, according to the European Language Portfolio.

- Our classes are very small (max. 7 people) and are held in a peaceful area of the city centre. We feel that small class sizes are essential to facilitate the learning process and ensure that focus is placed on the learning requirements of the individual student, and on helping him/her to overcome any difficulties in a friendly environment, whilst the range of courses on offer allows the student to adapt the programme to their individual needs.

- Our Italian language courses for non-beginners normally start every Monday (for beginners courses please refer to the entry dates on the application form,). Each student is encouraged to take a short test before starting a course so that his/her language needs can be ascertained, and it can be ensured that they are placed in a group of a similar level of ability and knowledge. On completion of a course the student will be awarded an attendance certificate by the AdG; in addition, the students are also offered the opportunity to take the officially recognised tests.

Classes are small to maximise learning

  • Italian Language classes are offered at all levels, from those students who are just beginning to those with a more advanced comprehension of the language.
  • Students will be tested on arrival and placed at suitable level.
    At the end of each month, all students sit a written exam.
  • If the student is successful, he/she is then allowed to proceed to a more advanced level.
  • Students are required to attend their classes on a regular basis.

 
After attending the several levels listed below, the student will be able to:
Beginner

1. Understand simple conversations and the general meaning of short written texts, containing everyday idiomatic expressions.
2. Ask simple questions and give brief descriptions of personal events, including hesitation or inversions in the sentence structure in the present and past tense.
3. Write short sentences and fill forms.

Elementary
1. Have simple conversations, allowing for occasional hesitations.
2. Understand the language spoken by a native speaker on issues of general interest.
3. Ask question and report simple events.
4. Understand the general meaning of short written passages containing simplified syntactical structures.
5. Know the main verbs, pronouns, polite forms of address and the future tense.
Pre-intermediate
1. Have conversations on issues of general interest and phone conversations allowing for occasional mistakes.
2. Read short newspaper articles and understand their general meaning.
3. Express doubts and wishes.
4. Write standard texts, such as letters or summaries which reveal a satisfactory knowledge of pronouns, the conditional and the imperative tenses.
5. Know simple idiomatic expressions.
Intermediate
1. Have fluent conversations on issues of general interest.
2. Understand standard texts fully and the general meaning of literary texts.
3. Write standard texts providing opinions and suggestions, thus showing a satisfactory knowledge of the conjunctive.
4. Know how to use several idiomatic expressions.
Post-intermediate 1. Have a fluent conversation with a native speaker and follow a conversation among native speakers.
2. Fully understand any text, standard or literary. Understand the general meaning of specialistic texts.
3. Speak using a wide vocabulary and appropriate terminology, in order to express a personal view of facts, wishes and opinions.
4. Write medium to long texts on any subject without mistakes, thus showing a good knowledge of tenses and forms.
Advanced
1. Understand native speakers having a conversation on specific subjects and be able to take part.
2. Understand specialistic texts, allowing for the occasional consultation of a dictionary.
3. Write texts of any length on any subject, thus showing a good mastery of subordinate sentences and different styles.
Proficiency
1. Report and comment on facts fluently and by making use of a wide and specific vocabulary
2. Understand different accents of the Italian language and spot nuances and shades of intonation.
3. Understand specialistic texts, capturing the details and slight differences.
4. Be able to take notes and react promptly or report on written and oral messages.
5. Write long essays thus showing a good awareness of written styles.

 

SUPER-INTENSIVE ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSES

 

These courses offer a combined programme of intensive Italian language followed by one-to-one tuition. Mornings are spent in the core class (beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, post-intermediate, advanced, proficiency). In the afternoon students take individual lessons and can choose from a number of special modules appropriate for their level.

Students can have:
 up to twenty extra-curricular hours a month of group activities.
Viewings of Italian films, nights out, guided tours to the main monuments in Florence and to the main towns in Tuscany will provide stimulating occasions to improve the student's vocabulary in a dynamic and enjoyable way.



  • A certificate specifying the successful completion of each level will be awarded to the student at the end of each course.
  • A diploma specifying the level which he/she has completed will be awarded to the student at the end of term.

THE TEACHING METHOD
Our courses are aimed to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and are carefully structured to develop your fluency and accuracy. At Accademia del Giglio we use a wide variety of real-life material such as, tv programmes, newspapers, magazine extracts, and our blog articles:
- activities for A1/A2 levels
- activities for B1/B2 levels
- activities for C1/C2 levels.
We organize regular excursions so that our students learn italian as it is currently used by native speakers.
 
 
"IN DUE"

"In due" is a free service offered by the Accademia del Giglio. Our students are introduced to other Italian students who are studying foreign languages and together they speak in Italian and in the foreign student's mother tongue. Both students are therefore given a chance to develop their communicative skills, practice what they have learned in their classes and use their second language to meet new people and socialize.

 
CREDITS & CERTIFICATES

The Accademia del Giglio recommends that students who would like to receive credit for their studies abroad check with their university or college prior to registration.
As most universities and colleges consider 15 hours of study per term to be an acceptable level, we offer classes which provide the equivalent of 5 hours of credit per term for the study of the Italian language, along with optional hours for those students who wish to study other modules such as the history of art, studio art, etc. Please click here for more detailed information.
 
 
Please note: Since 1995 all our courses have taken place in the school premises and have been held by our qualified and experienced teaching staff. We are not a school selling courses which afterwards other schools or institutes take charge of. That is why we offer only a selected choice of courses, whose programmes and schedule have been tested and improved throughout these years.
